New Music Single provides funding for artists to:

  • professionally record a single song
  • create visual content to promote the single
  • put towards other marketing and promotion costs to increase New Zealand audience awareness and engagement with the audio and video content.

Funding details

Artists creating a new single can apply for:

  • up to $10,000 (plus GST, if registered)
  • plus a 10% mandatory Artist Creation Fee
  • a total per fund of up to $11,000.

The mandatory 10% Artist Creation Fee, of up to $1,000 plus GST (if applicable), will be added to your grant and paid out only in the final drawdown. This fee specifically covers the artist's creative work on the project.

How to apply

Before you apply for New Music Single funding, make sure:

  • your music is classified as New Zealand music
  • you meet our entry threshold criteria

To be eligible to apply for New Music Single funding, you need to answer ‘yes’ to at least 10 out of 30 criteria benchmarks for your music to date.

These criteria determine that artists:

  • have made steps to develop their audience
  • will use the funding to further the goal of expanding their audience.

The criteria document will ask you about your:

  • audience and/or following
  • track record in the New Zealand music scene
  • business credentials
  • strategic plans for what you will do with the funding
  • budget and how you intend to spend the funding

There is also information about:

  • eligible costs and budget
  • grant allowance
  • what is considered a responsible use of public funds.

Budget

All Music funding applications must include an initial budget outlining your expected costs.

  • The Application Budget Template can be found as an Excel spreadsheet under New Music Single documents below, or it is available here on Google Sheets.
  • You can then upload or link to it in your New Music Single funding application.

Successful applicants can claim any eligible expenses from the date the funding round opens.
