What is New Music Pan-Asian?

Funding of up to $10,000 (plus GST, if registered) is available for artists who self-identify as Pan-Asian*, plus a 10% mandatory Artist Creation Fee, for a total per fund up to $11,000.

As of January 2024, the mandatory 10% Artist Creation Fee amounting up to $1,000 plus GST (if applicable), will be appended to your grant and disbursed exclusively in the final Drawdown. This fee pertains to internal creative services provided to the project by the artist. Consequently, the New Music Pan-Asian funding grant of $10,000 will include an additional maximum payment of up to $1,000, resulting in a total funding amount of up to $11,000.

The funding may go towards the costs of recording, mixing, mastering; any additional production or work on a single song; creating visual content to aid in the promotion and release of the single; and promotion and marketing.

New Music Pan-Asian is the newest targeted funding initiative for NZ On Air which was launched during NZ Music Month in May 2023. It is aimed at supporting Pan-Asian musicians in releasing their songs, creating accompanying visual content and promotion.

The fund was created in response to the lack of equitable representation of Pan-Asian New Zealand musicians in the Aotearoa music sector.

Unlike New Music Single funding, New Music Pan-Asian has no entry threshold criteria for applying and is open to all Pan-Asian identifying artists.

*Pan-Asian, as defined by the ‘M49 Standard’ from the United Nations, covers all of Asia (Central, Eastern, South-Eastern, Southern and Western Asia).

As of January 2025, all Music funding applications must include an initial budget outlining your expected costs. This is to help assessors understand what you will be using the funding for and allows applicants to budget their project prior to receiving funding.

Successful applicants can now claim any eligible expenses from the date the funding round opens, instead of from the date the funding round closes.
