Funding by NZ On Air now means nearly all New Zealanders can watch television and listen to National Radio and Community Radio.
Continual transmission upgrades also mean that small, rural communities, normally not serviced by the broadcasters, can see and hear local radio and television programmes.
Funding for transmission upgrades is determined on the basis of an analysis of the costs of complexity of the work in relation to the benefits per household in the community, within NZ On Airs overall budget constraints.
NZ On Air is in close dialogue with broadcasters as they seek new and more cost effective national transmission options, such as satellite technology, which will ultimately provide transmission coverage throughout New Zealand at a lower price. Since December 2001 TV One and TV2 have been available as free-to-air channels via Sky Digital.
