Community Diversity Series 2011 RFP

30 June 2011

Introduction

NZ On Air is seeking proposals for a new television series to reflect and celebrate the growing ethnic and cultural diversity of New Zealand's population.

Background

NZ On Air has a statutory responsibility to provide broadcasts for minorities in the community including ethnic and other minorities.  There are a number of programmes that we have supported over the years that tell the stories of New Zealand's many resident cultures.  We are now interested in new ideas for exploring the stories of the increasing diversity of communities living in New Zealand - including both recent and more well established groups.

The Programme

We are seeking a half hour series of at least 35 episodes to tell the stories of different cultural communities in ways that are relevant to them, as well as the wider audience.  We expect the series will explore a number of key and common matters important to these communities - language, education, health, employment, cultural identity, cultural fit, successes and challenges.

The format of the series is open but we would expect the core of the series to be documentary/information based.

The budget is up to $1,400,000.

Proposals should seek opportunities to deliver the programme content on multiple platforms to maximise audience reach and awareness. Applications that include innovative, interactive multiplatform options or partnerships including web, print and radio will be welcome.

Availability of the programme to the target communities as well as a significant mainstream audience is a priority.  Appropriate broadcaster scheduling, promotion and online presence will be important criterion.

Who can apply?

Proposals are invited from experienced documentary/factual practitioners or new entrants teamed up with an experienced producer.  Evidence of existing connection with, or support from, various cultural communities should be provided

How and when?

The deadline is 5.00pm Friday 19 August 2011.

All applications must have secured the broadcasting support of a mainstream free to air television broadcaster.

Eight copies of each submission are required and should include completed NZ On Air application forms.  See our website for the application form which details all required documentation.

How will applications be considered by NZ On Air?

Evaluations will be discussed at the NZ On Air Board Meeting in October 2011 and the Board's decision will be advised as soon as possible thereafter.
