We have established a second Māori Innovation fund of $1 million. This is for the creation of innovative, primetime Māori television programmes that appeal to a broad audience on a mainstream, free to air broadcaster. Applications close 5.00pm, 15 April 2011.
Earlier this year NZ On Air commissioned research to examine the state of Māori mainstream television today. The report by Hinewehi Mohi, Stacey Morrison and Scotty Morrison of Ngā Matakiirea, in association with Tim Thorpe Consulting, can be downloaded here (PDF 1.42MB).
In response to the feedback in the report, proposals that embrace an entertainment format, particularly comedy, may be favoured. They may show old ideas presented with a new twist or they may show new ideas in a tried and true format. The key question must be: what is going to attract, satisfy and surprise a broad audience with insight into Maori POVs, issues, talent, humour or creative endeavour?
